Update: I’ve given up on this coddler and purchased a used King Royal Worcestershire coddler to replace it. I love how much easier this coddler is to clean so I wish it worked out. However, there is one design flaw that I can’t get over. The bottom of the coddler isn’t any heavier or thicker than the rest. Because of this, if your water level is too high, the coddler will tip over and start to float away leaking water in and egg whites out. Also, because of the design, the bottom of the cup gets more heat and cooks more than the rest. The Royal Worcester is weighted with extra porcelain at the bottom which both keeps it from floating away and insulates it for even cooking. It’s much easier to get cooked whites and runny yolks. I also prefer the narrower shape and 2 egg vs 3 egg capacity of the Royal Worcester. Again, the wide shape of this coddler encourages the yolks to sit side by side instead of in the middle, which makes it harder to get a runny yolk and cooked whites.Original review:My family is a big fan of coddled eggs and “soldiers” (butter toast cut into slices for easy dipping). We have been using King Sized porcelain coddlers from Royal Worcester that fit two eggs. While I love the antique beauty of these coddlers and the different designs, I hate trying to clean the metal threading. Especially, where the metal meets the porcelain. I feel like I could never get far enough under there to get them clean. Finally, one of our old coddlers came apart and the threads detached from the porcelain. The mess I discovered under the threads confirmed my fear. When looking for a suitable replacement, it seemed like my choices were either buy a used Royal Worcester in questionable condition or get one of these. Neither were inexpensive. I opted to try out the Aggcoddler XXL. The fact that it was dishwasher safe, was definitely appealing after years of spending as much time huddling over the sink washing the coddlers and I spent enjoying the contents inside.First of all, there was a review that said their XXL coddler barely held 1.5 eggs. I don’t think they received the right item. Ours fit 3 eggs with plenty of room to spare. I liked the inspiration provided for various items to fill the coddler with in addition to the egg. I’ve always just buttered our coddler and added some salt and pepper. Today we upped our coddled egg game and added some chives and truffle slices that had been received as a gift and were just sitting in my pantry unopened. It was delicious. The instructions on the coddler say to cook 15 minutes vs the King Royal Worcester for 10. Maybe this is because they assume that you will always cook 3 eggs? I cooked for 12 and ended up with a lot of liquid but the outside was cooked. I think 13 minutes might have been a better number. I feel like 15 would be too much. After 12 minutes, I had a lot of water leakage so the eggs were very watery but the egg white seemed to be cooked along with some yolk. The bottom definitely cooked more than the top. I’ll have to play around and see what happens when I cook our usual 2 eggs in it.Pros and Cons:The downside to this design is 1) you have to make sure that your water level isn’t too high as you will end up with an egg cup full of water. This is most problematic when mixing coddlers of different heights. It makes it hard to cook with my old coddlers or if you wanted to mix the XXL with the regular size. At least with the Royal Worcester, once you add the eggs, the cups are full almost to the top so even when the water leaks in, it’s just a bit at the very top. These have so much extra room, you end up with a lot of water in your egg. On the other hand, the contents, though watery, were still delicious, so there’s that. Another problem with the design is that the silicon strap is easy to put on when the coddler is cool, getting it off when you remove the coddler from the heat, is not. And there’s no way that I was going to be able to stretch it back on once the coddler was hot. So if you open it and find that your eggs aren’t cooked enough, you’re out of luck for getting it back in the pot. On the plus side, this coddler is microwave safe so you could at least put it in a microwave for 30 seconds if this happens.I still ended up hand washing the coddler as I feel like dried runny egg yolk requires elbow grease. It was much easier and faster than trying to clean yolk out of threads. It looks plenty sturdy for the dishwasher, so if you’re going to run the dishes right away after using, I would think you would be okay if you have a good dishwasher.I don’t regret my purchase but I do wish they made a 2 egg cup. I’m worried when I switch to our usual two eggs for breakfast, I’m going to end up with very watery eggs. As it is, with three eggs, I ended up pouring off some water before eating. I wish I could get the AggCoddler in different colors on Amazon so if I were cooking multiples with different fillings, you could tell them apart. They do offer a couple different colors if you buy directly from the company but the price of shipping is the same as the coddler. In summary: I like the Royal Worcester better for cooking and the fact that everyone gets their own design. I like the AggCoddler better for clean up and the more modern aesthetic. Neither are perfect but both made delicious coddled eggs.
